Objective:
To design a web site that would
complement this freight forwarders existing business and allow customers to track their
shipping documents through Cargo Movement’s web site.
Solution:
First, we searched the web for details and then found some sound advice from the many
newsgroups on the software package that would be most suitable. In our opinion,
it is always better to see what software program you are going to be using and
then build your systems hardware design and web site around it. Once we had
identified the software package, we then set out to establish what hardware would be necessary for
a.)
to run their software b.) to be able to allow the existing accounting software
to be able to be read on the internet. We had to make
sure that several computer languages could ‘talk’ to each other,
specifically Cobol and HTML. This is a sampling of the many aspects we needed to
consider and once we had, it was time to implement our
solutions.
Conclusion:
Once we had incorporated all the aspects; the accounting software, the
construction of the web site and the incorporation of the imaging software and
hardware we were able to achieve our final objective. Cargo Movement’s
customers are now able to go to their web site, input their P.O.D number, airway
bill information or bill of lading information. They are then able to view an
image of the paperwork, allowing them to print out the documents for their
records without having to wait for the originals to arrive at their location.
This was one of the most rewarding projects we have worked on
because the advanced technology that was used taught us that if you can think
it, it can be done. The whole team at Cargo Movement were very interested
throughout the project and have become more than just clients.
